Stargazing might seem as simple as looking up, but there’s a whole universe of ways to make your experience more meaningful, memorable, and comfortable. Whether you’re heading out for your first look at the Milky Way or you’ve been chasing constellations for years, here are our top recommendations for getting the most out of your night under the stars.

Stargazing Apps

The App Store and Google Play are full of stargazing apps designed to enhance your view of the night sky. These tools help you pinpoint constellations, identify planets, track satellites, and learn the stories behind the stars, right from your phone or tablet.

When choosing an app, think about what features matter most to you. Do you want real-time sky overlays to identify what you’re seeing, alerts for upcoming meteor showers or planetary sightings, offline content for remote areas without service or interactive features like quizzes or guided tours.

We recommend reading reviews and checking app features to find the best fit for your adventure.

Astrophotography

Photographing the night sky isn’t quite as easy as pointing and clicking. It’s an art and a science. You can capture impressive night sky photos with just your phone by using a tripod or stable surface to keep the camera steady. Turn on Night Mode (if your phone has it), manually adjust exposure by tapping and dragging the brightness slider, and avoid using zoom. For even better results, try a manual camera app to control settings like ISO and shutter speed, and consider editing your shots afterward to bring out the stars. But the payoff? Stunning shots of star trails, the Milky Way, or maybe even the northern lights.

Essentials & Weather

Whether you’re planning a quick stop to catch the stars or an all-night celestial adventure, packing smart can make a big difference.

Binoculars or a telescope are highly recommended for getting a closer look at stars, planets, and the moon. If you’re out with friends, be sure to bring a red flashlight or headlamp, these preserve your night vision and keep things comfortable for everyone without harsh white light. Comfortable seating, such as camp chairs or a picnic blanket, will help you settle in and enjoy the view for extended periods. Even in the summer, nights can get surprisingly chilly, so pack warm layers including hats, gloves, and an insulated jacket. Don’t forget to bring snacks and water and maybe a thermos of hot cocoa for a cozy touch. Bug spray is a must during warmer months, while in cooler seasons, warm boots and extra socks can help keep you comfortable well into the night.

Before you head out, always check weather, cloud cover, humidity and visibility.

Use weather resources like Clear Sky Chart, Weather Underground, and NOAA’s hourly forecasts.

Whether you're visiting one of Montana’s State Parks or Lakes, a little planning goes a long way toward making your stargazing experience unforgettable.
