Stars are a standard part of the night sky for folks in Montana, but a rare occurrence for people living in large cities and light-polluted regions throughout the world. Montana’s Trail to the Stars gives visitors and locals the tools they need to experience our night skies and stargaze like a pro. The stargazing sites range from large RV parks to bare-bones recreation areas, but they all share a sense of remoteness.
There are no set itineraries for Trail to the Stars; rather, the sites have been assembled with one goal in mind: to give a variety of options for enjoying our magnificent dark skies—from just on the outskirts of a town to the middle of nowhere. We hope that you will find a location, or several, to kick back and look to the stars.
Be sure to check out our Know Before You Go page before you head out so that you can adequately prepare for your adventure.
Montana’s Trail to the Stars is a joint project through the Eastern Montana Initiative, made possible thanks to the collaboration of Central Montana Tourism, Missouri River Country, Visit Southeast Montana and the Montana Office of Tourism and Business Development. Each partner brings their unique perspective and expertise to the table, making the trail a valuable resource for visitors and locals throughout Montana.
