Matthews Recreation Area is a beautiful, well-maintained day-use and camping area positioned along the Yellowstone River. This riparian area is flanked by open grassy meadows; cottonwood, green ash and willow trees line the riverbank. Fishing, birdwatching and strolling around the area are popular day activities—just remember to "pack it in, pack it out.”

After a day of kicking back on the water or exploring the surrounding area, there's nothing better than laying back and watching for shooting stars to the soothing sounds of the Yellowstone River rushing in the distance.

• Kayak the iconic Yellowstone River (bring your own; there are no rentals nearby).
• Fish for sauger, walleye, catfish and more on the Yellowstone River (bait and tackle shops available in Miles City).
• Visit Miles City for great eats, drinks, shops and museums.
