Get away from it all in a picturesque location where dark skies make for excellent stargazing—so excellent, in fact, that the James Kipp Area was given a Class-1 rating on the Bortle Scale, which indicates it’s at the highest level for dark skies.

The area is located on a historic section of the Upper Missouri River and, in addition to stargazing, is perfect for fishing, boating and wildlife viewing. It offers interpretive signs for visitors to learn about the area, as well as ample single and group campsites.

During the Day:

  • Fish, float and boat the Missouri River.
  • Take a self-guided auto tour of the Charles M. Russell National Wildlife Refuge.
  • Visit the Slippery Ann Wildlife Viewing Area where, in the fall, you can witness hundreds of elk congregating during the rutting season.
